About Momentary Magic

Momentary Magic encapsulates the reason why I enjoy photography so much.  I love the special feeling of freezing that moment in time, capturing forever those fleeting moments to gaze at forever, whether it be a newborn, emotions on a human face, a rainbow or sunrise.  Truly, to me, those moments are magical and often that moment comes and goes in a flash.

I feel like I have magical powers to freeze time and to gaze upon that image for years and generations to come.

Photographs have the ability to tell so many stories and convey so many emotions.  I find them to be incredibly powerful.  I gain the same sense of peace, joy and anticipation whether seeing a tiny bundle of baby interact with its parents and falling into a deep sleep; or sitting in the dark on a beach at Tamarama waiting for the colours in the sky to change at dawn.  Both moments won’t last forever, but to capture that beauty is inspiring and incredibly special.

Expressions that cross the human face or colours that explode in the sky can happen in the blink of an eye.  I love the challenge of taking photos that show the beauty of that moment, that can be shared and viewed at leisure.

Anne Geddes was my idol growing up in the 90s and I always dreamed of photographing babies in a similar fashion.  It took a lightbulb moment four years ago, to begin the transition to become a professional photographer, away from my more recent work in recruitment.  Since then I have spent time learning my craft being inspired by Kelly Brown and improving my technical skills.

I am living my dream photographing babies.  My son was an IVF miracle, so I think every baby is absolutely precious.  It gives me the greatest joy to be trusted to photograph and capture precious memories in prints and canvas.  I love taking all the photography and newborn posing skills I have learnt over the past three years to help you capture memories that can be preserved forever.  History and capturing moments in time are so important to me personally.

There are so many milestones and moments that stick in your mind as a mother forever, but it is even better to have a visual prompt to share with your family as they grow up.

I have a great eye for colour and have spent three years gathering backdrops, props, textures and outfits from what I believe to be the best suppliers throughout the world.  In addition, I have spent the time learning my craft and the technical aspects of posing babies to ensure their divine little features and shown off to the best advantage.

As beautiful as I believe my props and backgrounds to be, I never want anything to overshadow or overwhelm the baby in the photo.  Quite simply, your child is the hero of the photo and anything in the photo should only enhance it and not detract from their squishy little cheeks, rosebud lips, little button nose and precious little faces.

You want to create timeless, beautiful images that will remind you of what your baby looked lie in those first precious weeks.  Their features changes so quickly, it seems like almost on a daily basis.  Let’s face it, the first weeks are really a blur of feeds, changing nappies and trying to master the art of sleep.

My other great loves are sunrises and sunsets.

I am lucky enough to have lived close to Tamarama Beach for the past 20 years.  I try to catch as many sunrises as I possibly can and indulge in a fortnight of photography bliss during the annual “Sculpture By The Sea”.
